Before giving manual updates of your WordPress site, it is better to have a backup of your database tables and files so that you do not have to fall in problem if something go wrong unfortunately. This tutorial will cover some simple ways to backup your WordPress website.
2 easiest ways to backup your WordPress site
You can backup your WordPress site by using 2 simple ways that are written below:
- Backup WordPress manually
- Backup WordPress by Softaculous
Backup WordPress manually
You may know that WordPress is a PHP and MySQL based web application. As such, it is necessary to have backup all its files and its database to have a full copy of your site. You can copy your files via FTP. I think copying files via FTP will be easy for you. If you do not know about FTP or its use, please see our FTP tutorial
Be confirmed that all the saved files and folders in the directory WordPress is installed in public_html if it’s the core application for your site.
The WordPress database can be backed up as any other database. You can follow the instructions given in our tutorial MySQL Database Backup. If you have multiple MySQL databases and you cannot understand which one your site is using, then open the wp-config.php file in the WordPress root folder. Then you’ll find the database name saved next to the DB_NAME option.
Backup WordPress by Softaculous
Although Softaculous is mainly used to install new applications with a single click, it also can be used to make a full backup of your WordPress site.
Now, you will find a list of the WordPress applications that are installed in your account via Softaculous.
If you cannot find your site listed here, perhaps it was not installed via Softaculous. In such case, you will have to add it to the system. You can add it by using the Import page on the same screen. To start the backup process, hit the yellow folder icon next to the site.
You can select here, whether to backup only the WordPress files, only its database or both.
Additionally, you will receive some very helpful information about the folder and the database that will be backed up. You can add a note to this backup, if you want. Then, hover over the Backup Installation button at the bottom of the page and simply click on it.
Your backup will be ready within a few moments (time can vary depending on the size of your site). If your backup creation becomes successful, then you will receive a confirmation message. To proceed, follow the link to the Backups page.
Here you will find all the backups that you’ve created. You may want to save your backup locally; in that case, click on the blue arrow icon and it will be downloaded to your computer.
